From the front cover of Bigdey Kahuna by HaRav Yisroel Haim Blumenthal z"l |
The designs of hechsher design no.331 and no.431 appear to be based upon the turban (mitzenefes מצנפת) worn by the Kohen Gadol in Temple times. At the top, partly obscured, are what might be Tablets of the Law. The turban was formed from a linen scarf sixteen ammah (about 23.3 feet) in length. It was wound onto the head to form a low outline unlike the tapering, pointed turban worn by ordinary Kohanim. The seven jewels in the headband may be copied from heraldic designs but might allude to the days of the week with the central 'Shabbat' jewel slightly separated from the six working days. |
